This is ONE | Celebrating Your Baby's First Birthday with a Family Portrait

Oh how time flies!  Wasn't it just yesterday that we were photographing Ciara's maternity session in anticipation of sweet Cedar's arrival?!  Now this darling boy is one year old and ready to take the world by storm.

Anytime we get to spend with the Paulus family is a treat!  Our camera loves them almost as much as we do!  Always looking like they stepped right out of a magazine *a million heart eyes here*

We love the way Ciara kept each of Cedar's styling bright and simple!  Everything about his wardrobe speaks to his family's love of all things nature-inspired.

Celebrating Dad this Father's Day

We know you don't need an excuse to tell the world how awesome your Dad is and how much you love him, but isn't Father's Day a perfect opportunity to brag a little!?  We believe that the bond between a dad and his kids is powerful and beautiful, and we consider it our privilege to work with families in documenting that relationship throughout many different stages of life!

This is 14 | Everything beautiful about photographing Middle School

I have specialized in photographing teenagers for over a dozen years (even writing that sentence down here blows my mind, by the way) but as the time has gone by, there is a special joy that has grown for me in capturing the Middle School years.  I recently shared portraits of my own daughter earlier this month and now I had the great fortune to photograph 14 year old Sydney.

This tiny window of time that bridges childhood to adulthood is absolutely beautiful photographically and it's always fun to collaborate with both the kids and parents to create portraits that can reflect equal parts strength, vulnerability, joy and thoughtfulness.

This blue lace dress from Nordstrom is one of 14 year old Sydney's favorites from her session and hearing Mom say that they had a ball shopping together and getting ready for the session was a cherry on top of this sweet experience.

Why I love photographing Middle School children...

Every year the tree in my backyard blooms beautifully for about 4 point 2 seconds (apologies for the sarcasm... it just seems that the gorgeous Spring flowers are just so fleeting) Coincidentally, this year that was about how long my 14 year old daughter gave me to play pictures with her before she cut me off.  (heehee) Let me explain...

Impromptu photo shoots are nothing new for my kiddos (welcome to having a photographer Mom) but as my daughter became a teenager, I felt this overwhelming need to create a visual reminder for her. Of what you might ask? Of her big, wild curls, her joy, and the things that make her uniquely special.  Maybe more simply, I really just needed an  unflinching counter balance to Middle School culture. (And according to my daughter, I needed to get it done before basketball practice!)

I am often struck by how often young girls... and full grown women, do not see their beauty in the way that the rest of us do.  By far, my greatest blessing is in creating portraits that positively speak louder to our spirit than any whisper of doubt ever could.

We first met Bellevue High School senior Annika and the lovely Strandell Family (pictured above) this past summer for high school senior portraits and it's clear that lovely runs in the family.

Red Riding Hood Valentine's Day Photo Shoot

So my 11 year old daughter walks in wearing her Dad’s USC t-shirt wrapped around her head this past Sunday and I must admit... I was intrigued. “What are you doing there Ryann?” I say. “Um... trying to figure out how to turn Wesley (her 5 year old brother) into a Wolf” she replies with a smile.”

We have been photographing the Vizquel Family portraits each year for over 10 years. Seriously. What?  Mind blown on so many levels it's hard to know where to begin so I'll just begin and end this post... and coincidentally the 2017 year with gratitude. Thank you.  Thank you for all of the amazing moments, blessings and joys.  Here's to 2018!

Dreaming of a White Christmas 2017

Each year my entire family comes together for our annual family Christmas photo shoot and here's what I learned this year. Choosing white on white for the color theme is clearly the quickest and most efficient way to have my extended family hate my guts (haha).  Frankly... I really don't care because it was so completely different than anything we've ever done and I am in love with the clean, modern look! (Cue Demi Lovato song... #SorryNotSorry)

Texture, style and sparkle were my go-to moves to keep the look fresh for the kiddos. For myself I went full " Rent The Runway ."  If you are not familiar with this service... get ready to have your mind blown!   The Rent The Runway site features high end, designer outfits that you rent and return.  So absolutely perfect for photo shoots (obviously) but also really awesome for making a statement each and every time you have a special occasion or dressy event without wearing the same thing twice.

Flexibility with a really large group is the key to wardrobe success (visually and for your sanity)  Let's be honest, we're making a family portrait with 16 people ranging in age from 4 to 80... not solving world peace...so be open to the idea that not everyone is going to be 100% on board with your vision. My dream scenario was "white on white" - but in sharing the idea with my family I let them know that silver, cream or darker bottoms were perfectly fine. These color scheme options gave everyone the wiggle room to find something that suited their taste.

Prep Tips for your Dream Family Portraits

What comes to mind when you envision the most perfect family portraits?  Aside from wanting it to be a joyful and confidence building experience for each of your family members, we know that you have a dream and we want to make that picture in your head become a treasured memory you can showcase on your wall and display in your home!

It's safe to say that most of the hard work comes before you actually stand in front of the camera.  Here our top three portrait prep tips for creating those family photos that you have been dreaming about:

1 | Style stretches from head to toe.  Now is the time to get the whole family standing in front of the full length mirror and focus on all of the little details that will add a polished look to your wardrobe styling.  Fellas, this can mean including your favorite watch or coordinating the right socks with your shoes.  Ladies, consider painting your nails or popping in with your favorite jewelry pieces.

2 | Don't underestimate the power of camera ready hair and makeup.  Every day beauty styling does not read the same way on camera as it does to our eyes.  We rave about our style partners not just because they are fabulous and fun, but they work magic in the world of photo shoot prep!  By factoring time with our hair and makeup artists into your shoot day, not only will you look like a million bucks, but you'll feel relaxed and ready to work it for the camera!

3 | Collaboration is key.  You've been dreaming about the perfect portraits, and our photography team is excited to be included in your journey!  Sending us snapshots of each person's wardrobe and communicating your vision is essential for allowing us to design a photo shoot that allows your dreams to become a reality.

Pinterest worthy family portraits. The 2 Essential elements and one bonus Tip

Have you always dreamed of a Pinterest-worthy family portrait but wondered how to make the magic happen for your own family? There are really only 2 essential elements for the photo shoot of your dreams and believe it or not... renting perfectly behaved children and a camera loving husband are not on the list! Matter of fact -- the most important piece just begins with you and your desire to make it happen.

1. Set a date and stick to it. This one sounds simple but really -- Put the time on everyone's busy calendar well in advance.  If the holidays are when your family comes together or you just love Fall leaves -- lock it down and begin planning.

2.  Communicate with your photographer and collaborate together.  If your spouse is not into playing pictures with you (cue the shock and awe) there really is no need to worry.  You can be rest assured that your photographer is super excited to plan and brainstorm with you.  Everything from locations to wardrobe, color palette to props are a really great time for the person behind the camera.

BONUS TIp: On the day of your shoot be sure to tell your family how important this is to you.  This is the occasion to really turn on the water-works and milk it for everything that it's worth. I'm kidding. (A simple well placed bribe will suffice - heehee)

Big thank you to the Heck Family for another fabulous experience working together on this portrait session. This formal family picture inspired by Paris, with blush, lace and bow tie perfection draped in front of a magnificent castle is already one of our favorites of all time.
