Pinterest worthy family portraits. The 2 Essential elements and one bonus Tip

Have you always dreamed of a Pinterest-worthy family portrait but wondered how to make the magic happen for your own family? There are really only 2 essential elements for the photo shoot of your dreams and believe it or not... renting perfectly behaved children and a camera loving husband are not on the list! Matter of fact -- the most important piece just begins with you and your desire to make it happen.

1. Set a date and stick to it. This one sounds simple but really -- Put the time on everyone's busy calendar well in advance.  If the holidays are when your family comes together or you just love Fall leaves -- lock it down and begin planning.

2.  Communicate with your photographer and collaborate together.  If your spouse is not into playing pictures with you (cue the shock and awe) there really is no need to worry.  You can be rest assured that your photographer is super excited to plan and brainstorm with you.  Everything from locations to wardrobe, color palette to props are a really great time for the person behind the camera.

BONUS TIp: On the day of your shoot be sure to tell your family how important this is to you.  This is the occasion to really turn on the water-works and milk it for everything that it's worth. I'm kidding. (A simple well placed bribe will suffice - heehee)

Get your personal brand right... a message from the CEO

I recently attended a networking event and the VP of Sales shared the following story. Her boss addressed the audience at their Fortune 500 company all-hands sales meeting. At the top of the presentation he featured photos of many key sales, marketing and leadership on the organization chart. Several of them had "stars" beside their images. Naturally everyone in the audience was curious to know what the "star" designation might mean. Promotion? Bonus? Special award? Nope. This was the CEO's ice breaker (using humor) to point out all of the bad photos. The public display of outdated images, selfies and wedding snapshots was met with a lot of chuckles and then followed by a serious call to action:

Get your personal brand right because you are representing the meticulously curated professional brand of your company.

Your headshot is your digital calling card and introduction almost everywhere so simply put, update your professional image to reflect the best version of who you are today.

I have been a Professional Headshot Photographer for over 12 years. I've photographed 1000's of people of all ages, shapes, and skin shades. I've also heard nearly every reason in the book for why business executives avoid getting their professional photos taken. Most excuses boil down to confidence... or rather lack of feeling confident when faced with the prospect of being photographed. The fear is really unwarranted but if the thought of going to the portrait studio resembles the feeling you get with a pending root canal, I'm here to tell you that you are not alone and it happens at every level of the career ladder.

Here is the truth -- you don't have to be naturally confident in front of the camera, your ideal weight is not a requirement to make you look great in a picture and trust me, the person you are now is way more qualified for the job than the person that you were 7 years ago.

Additionally, if you take one thing from this article, let it be the following: it's not your responsibility to be photogenic... it's MY job as a trained professional photographer to light and pose you beautifully.

The upside of a fantastic headshot is so much better than the downside of a lousy one.

I hope this gives you inspiration and motivation to refresh your own headshot and if you enjoyed this post and would like to learn my best tips & tricks for putting your best face forward click here for more Headshot and Personal Branding related articles that I have written.

Sparkling Fire sticks + small children ...what could go wrong? (Haha) | Clark Family Christmas Card

Formal family holiday portrait using sparklers to write Be Happy in front of house by Studio B Portraits_0232.jpg

Awe... The Clark Family Christmas card.  It seemed only fitting that I take what could have been an easy family portrait and make it complicated.  It went something like this...

"Oh I know Babe -- sparklers! Let's write with sparklers!!!  The bigger the better.  I just learned that they make 3 foot sparklers... how about we buy a boat load of those?! Let's be honest, how could flaming sticks of fire in the hands of our young children possibly go wrong?" :D

To his credit, my husband Glenn did not even flinch. (We've been married quite a while... he knows the drill by now and resistance is futile) We loaded up all three of our kids and we headed to the party store in search of my latest  great idea and we were in business just 5 SHORT HOURS  later.  (Haha)

Fast forward a month and cut to me and my entire family freezing on our front lawn in a "Winter is coming...31 degree temperature" trying to make this brilliant idea a success.   Looking back, I honestly, have never laughed more looking at one of our cards.  Here's what I will always remember -- 1. My son would not let me put him down the entire shoot.  2. My 11 year-old daughter kept dancing in silly gyrations in an attempt to stay warm and 3. The delight my middle kid enjoyed when she realized her amazing good fortune that she had her own personal Harry Potter wand.  (I already know that these are going to be some of my very favorite holiday family memories for 2015 ...not so much our numb toes and fingers...but the rest was pretty awesome)

Since many of your families are coming home for the holidays, this is always a really popular time for us to see you here at the studio.  If you are hoping to book between now and the New Year, here's a quick Contact Us link to check remaining availability. If you'd prefer to slip something under the tree for that person in your life who just loves pictures -- here's a quick link to our awesome Ready to Give - Gift Box

Mind blown!  For all of us that revel in the creative process -- you know how amazing it feels to see the beautiful results of collaborating with talented people.  We shot this 425 Magazine Cover and "On the Run" feature for the September Fashion Issue on the most beautiful Summer day and it was one of those experiences that remind me why I just love my job.  As you can see from the behind the scenes snaps... it really does take a village to pull one of these shoots together.  To quote my Mom -- "it takes a lot of work to be a natural beauty" ;-)   The thing that was so special about this shoot (other than it's obvious awesome-ness) -- was that we got to photograph in our hometown of Issaquah (XXX Restaurant, the Train Depot, and the Highlands vista were such perfect backdrops for this Thelma & Louise inspired shoot)

Shout out to @TCMmodels Hannah & Anastasia and the entire @SorellaSalon team.  Thank you @425Magazine ...just love working together.

Magazine Cover Shoot | Above The Lake - The Carr Family

So... I don't want to over-sell this, but -- The Carr Family is the best family ever! (cue the fireworks,  rainbows and ticker tape parade) :D No seriously... this was such a fun shoot -- and I'm even factoring in the part where I almost got flattened by their extremely enthusiastic puppy AND... Dad Chris playing a practical joke that literally left me speechless.

So the backstory... I met the Carr's at their beautiful Lake Sammamish home to photograph them for the cover of Above The Lake Magazine.  It's a gorgeous day like only Seattle can deliver.  To my delight... everyone is not only ready for their close-up but so warm and inviting that I think to myself ...gosh, it's like we have been friends for years ...or even better...I would totally like to be friends... similar to how we all feel every time we see Taylor Swift bring her favorite celeb BFF's on stage during her concert and secretly wish it was us (Am I alone here? Don't judge me :D ) Anyway - we're mid way through the photo shoot and Dad Chris says to me: "Hey, do you remember photographing me in Los Angeles many years ago" -- My mind races...I'm blank....how could I have forgotten this man? Admittedly -- I've done like a b-gillion photo shoots... but this is a great guy. Maybe the birth of my three kiddos really did rob me of all of my good brain cells)  That stream of consciousness happens in a rapid-fire one-two punch but I'm determined to rally.  Over the course of the next hour... it's a cat and mouse game of Chris walking me down memory lane... and me careening off into a semi truck of "I've got nothing-ness" (but all of that happens...just in my head) -- He mentions the Santa Monica location, the companies he worked for... it's all there, what is wrong with me??? And now as we close out the shoot -- I'm forced to admit... I'm a terrible person that somehow managed to forget this amazing human being ... to which he says with a huge grin "Just kidding, we've NEVER MET -- my daughter told me that you worked down there and I thought I'd have some fun with you."  --huh? what? -- OH-MY-GOSH.  (Maybe I should have been a little salty... but nope, I'm not embarrassed to share with you that I felt the most overwhelming sense of relief to know that I'm NOT crazy, my memory is actually still relatively intact) AND then my next thought...um, I still want to be friends with the entire lovely family!!!  (Alright, maybe I'm a little crazy ;-) ... but the Carr's are awesome so be sure to check out the feature on them in the new Above The Lake. )

Girls Senior Pictures | Top 4 Questions

Girls Senior Pictures | Top 4 Questions

Below are four really common questions that we get asked by senior gals (and Moms) related to 1. getting prepared 2.  the actual photo shoot and 3. best practices.  We thought it might be helpful to address them here featuring beautiful Sabrina from Skyline High School. She is a total "Do" from beginning to end.  Full disclosure -- our Senior Pictures Experience for the girls is admittedly... a little over the top -- I'm not even going to deny it.  The full scale production and style-team approach that goes into making this milestone extraordinary is meant to make this magical for everyone involved.  Am I potentially compensating for my own lackluster high school senior pictures embarrassment circa 1991? -- yes... yes I am.  (ding, "bitter" party of one!)  but my rationale is that every girl should have a time to feel beautiful, confident and celebrated. (and not have to wait until her wedding day to do it ;-) )

Question 1: Will you help me with posing?...I'm kind of nervous.

Oh yeah, absolutely!  Posing is supposed to fun... since we're just having a good time -- we'll crank up the music, show you tons of different options from natural to model-y and just play.  The brilliant part is you are able to relax, choose what you love and leave the awkward behind!

Question 2.  Is there anything that I should avoid like patterns or bright colors?

Um, NO.  Your senior pictures are all about you and since you are the only one in the photo -- you do you!  Let all of your style choices be a reflection of who you are and what you love about your look right now.

Question 3:  Do I really need professional hair & make-up?

We always recommend that you let us pamper you with camera ready hair styling & "ready for your close-up" make-up.  Our senior photo shoots are photographed just like a magazine-style model shoot (Karlie Kloss and Kendell Jenner get a style team... why shouldn't you?)  Whether you like to keep it natural or glam it up... perfect skin and shiny locks help you feel confident in front of the camera. (And for the things that hair & make-up don't cover... Photoshop is a beautiful thing -- we'll take care of any imperfections in post production!)

Question 4:  Can you help me with ideas and the overall look & feel of my shoot...what about locations?

Of course!  99% of the senior pictures that you see in our portfolio are photographed here at our state of the art studio so we encourage you to browse the gallery and make a note of your favorites. Additionally, prior to your session, we'll be sending you a Studio B Seniors Style & Prep Magazine to help to you get ready, coordinate props, and finalize your wardrobe so that this experience is uniquely You On Your Best Day.  We are also a little bit Pinterest crazy around here, so we're always updating those inspiration boards with fresh ideas.

Hope you found this helpful --if we missed something that you would love for us to answer... feel free to send us questions (chances are someone else has the same one that you do!)  This is hands down our busiest time of year for senior pictures, so if you are ready to schedule Contact Us for current remaining session dates.

#1 Question to ask before your Business Headshot...

Professional Headshots for Business_Studio B Head shots_0099.jpg I literally begin every professional headshot session with NO camera in my hand.  You and I sit on a couch and we just have a conversation.  I ask you the single most important question for our collaborative success - "Who are you?" or  "Who do you want to be today" -- For 3 out of 4 people...the question usually elicits some sort of smile and pondering expression as they really think about the answer.

Let's be honest -- as human beings...we wear a lot of hats.  For me -- wife, mom, sister, um...rocking amazing photographer but when I'm doing my own professional headshot -- I need to think about which side I'm showcasing (and spoiler alert...it's not the mashed-bananas-covered Mommy of a 2 year old) My professional brand is so much more than my ability to create a great picture of you -- what I need for you to know is that I'm ....a smiler, very quick to share an embarrassing story about myself, a big fan of reality TV (don't judge me), a creative communicator, and obsessed with all-things-business (your business, my business...the business that they were pitching on Shark Tank last night) :D  I don't put pressure on myself to deliver all of that in one portrait -- but rather more of a Gestalt effect over time because I get SO many opportunities to express myself visually...and by the way YOU do too. If you are thinking WHAT? Don't worry I'm going to explain.

Social Media is going to be your very best version of showcasing who you are and the many layers of your professional personality. Linked-In, Twitter, blogging, Facebook, Instagram, company website -- all of them are your "digital handshake."  When I photograph our portfolio sessions here at Studio B, we create 3 completely unique looks with the idea that each of the looks is a different part of the "professional you" that you would like for clients and colleagues to be introduced or to learn about you.  What becomes VERY important, is taking a few moments (and maybe even a sheet of paper to make a list) -- to think about who YOU are within your industry and what you want to share with your professional circle.  If you need a little help -- FYI, it's what we do here so feel free to contact us.

On a related note, I follow Guy Kawasaki on Linked-In and he offers some of the most straight forward and easy to execute advise regarding navigating social media that I've ever read (...he's also funny...love a quick wit) so if you are interested here's a link to his post on The Art of Social Media

Behind the Scenes Senior Video + Show | Sabrina | Eastside Catholic High Schook , Sammamish WA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuiMSfDf9Uo&list=UUDcMT7ksQv5c7VO4iwjGJFQ There are just those special shoots where I'm sure I'm having as much fun as the seniors themselves and Sabrina from Eastside Catholic's portrait session was that for me!  Loved her sophisticated city look in her black floral dress but it was when she put on her cowboy hat that we kicked it up a notch!
