A love letter to the people of Jamaica at Beaches Resort Ocho Rios

This is a love letter to Jamaica and the amazing hospitality of the people that hosted us at Beaches Resort in Ocho Rios. Prior to our visit I knew nothing of this magical place but when the unexpected happened two days before our family vacation, we zigged when life zagged. (Link to: crane crushes cruise ship)

With just 48 hours to figure out this “first world” not really a problem, problem we decided to call in a professional. (Natalie was referred to us and I’m pretty sure she should be wearing a cape… true super hero travel agent skills - I literally will never book my own trips again. The amount of stress she took off our shoulders was next level awesome) She told us about this beautiful Jamaica resort and she had us at “all-inclusive, sun-filled days”

From the moment we landed, we knew it was going to be amazing. You’d think it would be the tropical weather and beauty of the blue seas & skies but honestly… it is the people. As we were driving with our guide Winchester, his pride of their history and the philosophy of their culture was fascinating. I could never do it justice but let me tell you… even my kids were completely transfixed by his stories. It is clear that the island counts hospitality as their main export and they should because my goodness they are good at making you feel special.

On our last night of the trip, we all went around the table sharing what we loved most and to no ones surprise… it was the people, the staff, the Jamaican way that topped the list. (Followed quickly by crazy good food, snorkeling, banana boat rides, water slides and unlimited drinks & dessert)

Thank you for letting me share. I am so full of gratitude for this collective time with my family and since I know a lot of you are always looking for special experiences with your own tribe… you might want to consider Jamaica ;-) (I know I sound like an infomercial but there is no promotion or compensation from anyone… just a personal endorsement from our family to yours) That being said…

The gangs all here.

If you’d like for the Studio B to come on vacation with you - my team does thank you for the invite and we accept! Where do you want to go on vacation? We’re coming too #StudioBvacationSessions

Family Photography in your home | What is your design dilemma?

Have you ever wanted to add family photography to your home but felt overwhelmed with how to do it in a chic cohesive way? We'd love to help. Let us know where you are getting stuck. If picking the right mix of images has you scratching your head or you are swimming in a sea of images with no idea what to do next… tell us your tale! Does the architecture of your home leave you wall space challenged? Send us a message and share your photography design dilemma.

Thank you to the the Hancock Family for letting us share their beautiful wall display that we designed for their home . We created two wall series from nine favorites. Each of the pieces was custom framed in a sleek slate molding and we chose two different sizes of profile to keep it fresh but maintain an overall cohesive display. The benefit later of using a similar frame style is the pieces can be rearranged into a new design with ease. Do you have a photography design dilemma that you think we could help with? Send us your questions. pc: StudioBportraits.com

As a full service photography studio, our every day includes not only taking pictures, but designing albums, creating wall displays and storytelling visually in the spaces you love. The nuts and bolts of framing, installing, measuring and everything in between are right where we shine too so don’t be shy….

Mom Becky has an absolute gift for dressing her family in outfits that bring out their best features and celebrate their unique personalities.

  1. The key is starting with a theme - this year was studio formal.

  2. Next up, selecting a color palette. Black, silver, and sparkle

  3. Finally, style to match the personality of each family member.

Paying special attention to favorite features and style preferences for each person is a great way to add variety to the overall look and feel of your family portraits. Adore your neckline? Show a little shoulder. Beautiful biceps? - go sleeveless. Love your legs? Why not put those gams on display!

This one is for the book.... making memories into a treasured keepsake

“This one is for the book!” - I’m pretty sure I say that phrase at some point during every family shoot. It’s usually when something fun, silly, or maybe even decidedly “un-done’ happens but I wanted to talk a little bit about why these moments are treasured keepsakes. In a word - they are “real” and they become the images later that will make your heart smile.

You might be wondering what I mean by “book” so let me explain. We design a gorgeous flush-mount album from almost every family session that includes all of your favorite portraits from your family experience. The cover is typically your family in all of your photogenic awesomeness.

Open the cover and that’s where the real magic unfolds. The in-between moments that are both perfect and un-perfect all presented in one beautiful story that is your family right now.

I tell Mom’s all of the time - put these moments in your book. You will marvel at how much you enjoy the candid captures later. (And the things that you were critical about yourself… trust me, later all you will see is how young and beautiful you were too!!!)

Things that we forget about who these little humans were at this time come rushing back with just one turn of the page. Can you believe I’ve been photographing this lovely family since their baby boy was in Mom’s tummy? It’s true… and she has the books to prove it.

One of the things we hear most from our clients is how much they enjoy having the portraits from their session in one place with no “to do” item… nothing to frame or figure out. Plus — BONUS you have all of the moments socially too for your phone to show/share on Facebook, Instagram and with family. Best of both worlds.

Meet Team Clauson - Raising more than just a family

Meet Team Clauson (or as I have known them collectively for over 30 years  -- Erik, Jenny and  the twins.)  Their story begins like many - meet, marry and raise a family but after Erik was diagnosed with ALS, the Clauson's began raising much more than just their family, they began raising awareness and funds.

Studio B Portraits_great family pictures in jeans and white shirts_0142.jpg

If you are like me, the first time you ever really heard of ALS was when everyone started dumping buckets of ice over their heads a few years ago.  While that effort was an amazing step in educating and awareness of ALS, it was just that -- a first step.  For Erik and Jenny there is so much more work to do and the bravery, hope and joy with which they lead their lives is beyond inspiring.

Studio B Portraits_great family pictures in jeans and white shirts_0144.jpg

Erik wrote a letter to his friends and family earlier this year and I just wanted to share an excerpt of what he said because it is truly a life lesson for us all. "I'm learning not to dwell on the things I’ve lost and cannot do anymore. I don’t mourn the past but rather celebrate the moment, treasure the things that are still possible."

Studio B Portraits_great family pictures in jeans and white shirts_0143.jpg

In that spirit of possibilities Team Clauson is raising money for the Seattle ALS Walk, Saturday, September 8, 2018. Together we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The team is committed to raising money to support people in our community with ALS and spread awareness of the urgency to find treatment and a cure. To read more about Erik, Jenny and the Clauson's story or donate please click here.

MORE ABOUT ALS: Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.

Sometimes love is "Epic"  -- the"feel like you are in a movie", beautiful, overwhelmingly awesome and all-consuming "The Notebook" kind of romance AND sometimes it's decidedly more silly, goofy, a la "The Wedding Singer" :D --  For this engagement session with Ciara and Ben, I realized very quickly that we were going to have the very best of both!  These two are just sweet, funny and beyond lovely together.  (And seriously, who knew a red wool blanket could look this smoking hot?) I know you can't tell because these love-birds are so impossibly gorgeous and relaxed,  but it was NOT warm outside -- it was every bit Pacific Northwest February. Cut to this behind the scenes that we posted on our Instagram... (Yes, that's me in a climb-Mt Everest-jacket while these beauties lay by the river-side)

P.S  Oh on a slightly related note; (and you may already know this if you have been to Studio B) I'm obsessed with that book -- Awkward Family Photos and specifically...not ending up in it. How about I did a search on "awkward engagement" photos -- it's hysterical.  I will now add this to my list of places that I NEVER want to be published! (haha)
