holiday family portraits

The Clark Holiday Family Portraits... some times you have to pivot!

This year we planned to do our holiday family portrait up in the snow but Mother Nature had other plans - bone dry and not a snowflake in sight had us doing a major pivot (think Ross from Friends) so we headed into the city to make memories and a little holiday magic at Enchant Christmas in Seattle. It was chilly and crazy crowded, my husband was the biggest kid of the bunch but as always... we felt blessed in every way. All that being said… I have a confession…

Every year I wonder - “Geez what the heck are we going to do next year?” but isn’t it funny how something always comes together? I decided a long time ago that my true happiness was going to be in all pieces of the process. YES, I definitely want the photogenic reward but these family portraits for our crew have literally become our tradition together. I pitch concepts to my family, they veto. I pick out clothes and my son refuses to wear the shoes. I want to style the girls hair and darn it if they don’t have an opinion about that too but when all is said and done… we ALWAYS have fun and everyone loves looking at the portraits. So with another year under our belts I ask myself - “What are we going to do next time?” (Pretty sure I’m going to eat another dozen frosted Christmas cookies and figure it out later)

A final word… I find myself so full of gratitude for this time of year and having wonderful people in my life. I’m thankful for our clients that have grown with us over the last 13 years and to my amazing Studio B Family that makes it a joy to come to work every day and do what I love. Thank you to Erin and Makayla (below) for being so amazing.

Dreaming of a White Christmas 2017

Each year my entire family comes together for our annual family Christmas photo shoot and here's what I learned this year. Choosing white on white for the color theme is clearly the quickest and most efficient way to have my extended family hate my guts (haha).  Frankly... I really don't care because it was so completely different than anything we've ever done and I am in love with the clean, modern look! (Cue Demi Lovato song... #SorryNotSorry)

Texture, style and sparkle were my go-to moves to keep the look fresh for the kiddos. For myself I went full " Rent The Runway ."  If you are not familiar with this service... get ready to have your mind blown!   The Rent The Runway site features high end, designer outfits that you rent and return.  So absolutely perfect for photo shoots (obviously) but also really awesome for making a statement each and every time you have a special occasion or dressy event without wearing the same thing twice.

Flexibility with a really large group is the key to wardrobe success (visually and for your sanity)  Let's be honest, we're making a family portrait with 16 people ranging in age from 4 to 80... not solving world peace...so be open to the idea that not everyone is going to be 100% on board with your vision. My dream scenario was "white on white" - but in sharing the idea with my family I let them know that silver, cream or darker bottoms were perfectly fine. These color scheme options gave everyone the wiggle room to find something that suited their taste.

Let's Get Crazy with Red and Navy for Christmas Family Portraits | Studio B Issaquah

Meet the newly expanded Tamola Family.  I am going to start by saying that I'm totally not taking it personally that Baby Michael slept the ENTIRE...and I do mean entire photo shoot (let's be honest...at just 4 weeks, he is very busy growing).  His big sister more than made up for it though -- boundless energy and such a joy! We did slow down for one quiet moment and she got to hold her brother...all by herself for the very first time...awwwweee! Oh and on a fashion note, I'm completely crazy for Mom Josephine's style choices of red and navy....the argyle pattern on Dad's sweater vest and Baby's navy pin stripes were the perfect compliment to all of the girls red textures.  If you are wanting more Family Picture inspiration, here's a quick link to our family gallery or just keep working your way through the blog here :D

Mom Nicole has been bringing her beautiful kids to see me since my very first studio that I had at Gilman Village (that studio was the size of a walk-in closet by the way and the fact that she believed in me and my art from the beginning is something that I'll never forget)  This family never fails to crack me up...they are likely the closest thing to a reality TV show that I have ever had the pleasure to spend time with in real life.  First they are clearly all ascetically blessed (yeah for me and getting to photograph them) but it's the personality and dynamic among them that has me smiling throughout the entire photo shoot.  (Please note the kung-fu grip that young Caylee has on this sweet puppy above...THAT is a lot of love for one small dog :-) )

Not Awkward Family Photos at Studio B Portraits featuring the Van Hyning 5 | Issaquah WA near Bellevue

Yep...you have to be really cute to come here.  Totally kidding, it's not a requirement but it does seem to happen a lot -- yeah me!  Since this is my personal blog though, I'm about to let you in on a secret and I'm hoping it doesn't make me sound like an incredibly low achiever to say that I go into every single family portrait with the primary goal of not ending up on that website Awkward Family Photos?  Seriously, I just want everyone to have fun...honest to goodness fun, be silly, cut up -- there is nothing more photogenic (and not awkward :-) ) than joy.  I have photographed each of the Van Hyning kids for their senior pictures and I finally had the opportunity to do a modern family session with them.  Loved Mom Kathryn's choice of fall wardrobe! Embracing the season with autumn colors, scarves, jackets and hats is a family portrait "do."  Oh and for anyone that was curious....this is hands down the best time for outdoor family portraits if you're hoping to do holiday cards and gift giving...colors are pretty and timing is perfect for being ready to gift this season.

Holiday family pictures with the Wadlow's at Studio B Portraits in Issaquah

How much do I love this new holiday card design -- red feathers and damask -- only at Studio B I tell you! By now I know you all remember the Wadlow Family (they've been a regular feature here at Studio B in 2010.  I photographed Mom Michelle's fantasy maternity session with big sister Sophia, then baby Evelyn's newborn portrait session when she was just days old and now their first ever Holiday Family Portrait as a newly expanded family of four!  I am always a sucker for a theme and Michelle never disappoints in how she dresses these beautiful girls.  Extra bonus...Dad Charles shows up at the portrait studio all muscled and buff fresh off his PBX something something regime (I don't really know what it is, but he looked awesome too :-) )
