Can You Photograph Large and Multigenerational Families?

Large families are some of our favorite sessions to photograph because there is so much personality and connection within them.

And we know that coordinating a large family photograph can feel like a logistical challenge. Different ages, different personalities, different comfort levels in front of the camera…and usually one person (let’s be real, often Mom or Grandma) who has taken on the responsibility of getting everyone there.

Our job is to make the photography part easy.

You don't need to know how to arrange everyone. You don't need to decide who stands where. And you certainly don't need to spend the session telling everyone to “smile.”

That's our job, and we love every second of it.

Everyone Doesn't Have to Pose the Same Way

One of the biggest misconceptions about large family portraits is that everyone needs to be arranged in a perfectly symmetrical formation.

While we will absolutely create a beautiful portrait of the entire family looking at the camera, that's only one part of the story.

We also create smaller groupings throughout the session…parents with their children, siblings together, grandparents with grandchildren, couples, and individual family units.

These combinations give you a much more meaningful collection of photographs than one large group shot alone. And they allow us to capture the relationships within the larger family. Because ultimately, that's what you're trying to preserve.

Not simply a photograph of everyone who attended Thanksgiving dinner, but the relationships between the people in it.

We Know How to Pose a Large Family

Large groups require more than simply knowing how to take a good photograph.

They require direction.

With more people comes more hands, feet, faces, heights, and personalities to consider. Someone is always taller, someone is always shorter, someone is more comfortable in front of the camera than someone else.

Our team knows how to work with all of it.

We carefully arrange the group so that everyone is visible and the composition feels intentional. Then we guide each person through their positioning, posture, and expression.

A Private Studio Makes Large Family Portraits Easier

One of the advantages of photographing large families at our downtown Issaquah studio is that you have the entire space privately reserved for your family.

There aren't other clients coming in and out. You don't have to worry about strangers watching your session. And you aren't trying to coordinate a large group around a crowded outdoor location.

Instead, everyone can settle in, relax, and enjoy the experience.

We can create the formal family portrait, then move into smaller groupings and more relaxed images without having to pack everyone up and drive somewhere else.

It also gives us complete control over the environment, which allows us to create the polished, consistent look Studio B is known for.
