What is “Guided Posing” for Senior Pictures?

“I’m awkward in pictures.”

“I never know what to do with my hands.”

“I’m just not good at posing.”

We hear some version of this from senior girls all the time, and honestly, it’s one of the easiest things for us to reassure them about: you don’t have to know how to pose before you come to Studio B.

That’s our job.

A senior portrait session isn’t an audition for a modeling career, but we do photograph every single person like they could be on the front cover of Vogue or GQ. The good news is that you’re not expected to walk into the studio knowing which angles work best, how to position your hands, or what expression to make when someone puts a camera in front of you. You simply get to show up, and we’ll guide you through the rest.

You don't have to know what you're doing

One of the biggest things we want our senior girls to know is that there is no “right” way to be in front of the camera when you arrive. We’ll talk you through your poses, give you little adjustments as we go, and help you find the positions and expressions that feel natural to you.

Sometimes it’s as simple as turning your shoulders, shifting your chin, or moving your hand to a slightly different spot. Those tiny changes can completely change an image, and you don’t need to know any of them ahead of time. That’s what you have a photographer for!

We’re watching all of those details while you’re simply having a good time.

And yes, we have plenty of answers for the age-old question: “What am I supposed to do with my hands?”

The goal is never to make you look like someone else

There are plenty of beautiful senior portraits online, and it’s fun to save the ones that inspire you. Maybe you love an editorial image with dramatic lighting. Maybe you’re drawn to soft, natural portraits. Maybe you want something playful and full of movement.

We can take inspiration from all of those things while still making sure your portraits feel like you!

Some girls are naturally expressive and love being in front of the camera. Others are more reserved and feel most comfortable with quieter, more editorial portraits. Some want to laugh through the entire session. Others love a serious look.

There isn’t a personality type that photographs “better.”

Our job is to figure out what makes you feel confident and bring that out in your images.

Trust me, It gets easier as you go

There’s usually a little adjustment period at the beginning of a session. You’re getting familiar with the studio, the lighting, the camera, and your photography team. We’re getting to know you, too!

Then you start seeing the images develop in real time.

You might notice that you love a certain pose or that you feel especially confident in one outfit. We can build on that. Maybe we discover that you love movement, or that a certain expression feels especially natural. Suddenly, you’re not thinking quite so much about what you’re doing.

You’re just enjoying the experience.

That’s often when the best images happen.

So if you’re worried about being awkward...

You’re in good company.

You don’t need to practice poses before your senior session. You don’t need to memorize Pinterest poses or figure out your “good side.” You certainly don’t need to know what to do with your hands.

Come with your favorite outfits, your ideas, and your personality. We’ll take care of the rest.

Because the best senior portraits aren't about knowing exactly what to do in front of a camera. They’re about having someone you trust guide you through the experience until you feel comfortable enough to simply be yourself.

And somewhere along the way, you may discover something pretty wonderful: You’re a lot more confident in front of the camera than you thought.
