Holiday Style guide: Creams + Neutrals Are The New Timeless

Creams and neutrals are one of our favorite palettes for family portraits because they have a way of making a photograph feel instantly calm, polished, and timeless. But when you're planning holiday photos, there is a fine line between beautifully neutral and simply looking like everyone is dressed for a Tuesday. The secret is in the texture, layering, and small details that make a neutral palette feel special without relying on traditional holiday colors.

Let texture do the work

When everyone is wearing similar neutral tones, texture becomes especially important. A dimensional knit, soft cashmere, velvet, satin, wool, or a beautifully structured jacket gives the photograph dimension while keeping the overall palette cohesive.

This is particularly effective in a studio setting, where the lighting is intentionally controlled and every layer can be seen. Instead of trying to create visual interest with lots of different colors, let the fabrics and silhouettes create it for you.

The result feels warm and sophisticated rather than overly coordinated.

Think in shades, not matching colors

A family does not need to wear the exact same shade of cream to look pulled together. In fact, we prefer when they don't. Think ivory, oatmeal, camel, warm beige, taupe, soft gray, and chocolate. Mixing several shades within the same family creates depth and allows everyone's individual style to come through.

For example, Mom might wear a cream sweater dress, Dad could wear a camel jacket, and the kids might wear ivory, taupe, or soft brown. Nothing technically "matches," but everything belongs together.

That distinction is what keeps a coordinated family portrait from feeling like a uniform.

Keep the silhouettes elevated and simple

Neutrals tend to photograph beautifully when the clothing itself is chic. Look for pieces with beautiful shape and fit rather than relying on bold patterns or excessive details.

A tailored trouser, long skirt, simple dress, fitted knit, or classic button-down can feel incredibly elevated when it fits well and is styled intentionally.

For families, this also creates a portrait that will age beautifully. Five years from now, you may not remember exactly what was trending that holiday season…but you'll still love a photograph where everyone looked like themselves, just a little more polished.

The best holiday wardrobe doesn't have to announce itself as "holiday." Creams, neutrals, and warm earth tones can create some of the most beautiful family portraits when they're layered thoughtfully, given a little texture, and finished with just enough festive detail. The goal isn't for everyone to match. It's for your family to feel connected visually while still looking like themselves…which is exactly what makes a portrait feel timeless.
