What Should My Son Wear for Senior Pictures? A Parent’s Guide To Stress-Free Style

Senior pictures often feel simple on the surface…pick an outfit, show up, smile. In reality, the planning of the wardrobe choices made ahead of time have a big impact on how confident and timeless your son’s portraits will feel. We’ve put together a few of our top tips for parents to help guide your sons through the styling process, based on our 20+ years of experience working with high school senior fellas!

Think in “Outfits,” Not Pieces

One of the most common missteps we see is choosing items individually instead of considering the full look. Shirts, pants, shoes, and layers should feel like they belong together. When an outfit is cohesive, your senior looks intentional—even if the pieces themselves are simple.

Before the session, have your son try everything on together. If something feels off at home, it will photograph that way too.

Prioritize Comfort (It Shows on Camera)

If your senior is constantly adjusting sleeves, tugging at collars, or fidgeting with buttons, it will show in the images. Clothing should allow him to move, sit, and stand naturally. Elevated doesn’t mean restrictive; it means well chosen.

We always recommend doing a quick “sit, walk, reach” test before session day.

Let Grooming Do Some of the Heavy Lifting

A clean haircut 7–10 days before the session, trimmed facial hair (or a clean shave), and simple skin prep can elevate photos just as much as wardrobe. These details create polish without changing who your senior is.

Pro tip: upgrade your son’s experience to include our Essentials for Him skin + hair prep service. Investing 30 minutes of time before his photoshoot will result in confidence and styling that is always camera ready.

BONUS TIP: Bring Options, Then Trust the Process

Having four well-planned looks with a few bonus layers (think an extra jacket, a scarf, extra shoes, etc.) gives us flexibility without overwhelm. We’ll help choose what works best on camera and coordinate changes so everything flows smoothly. Parents are often surprised by which outfit becomes their favorite, and that’s part of the benefit of a guided experience.

At Studio B, our role is to guide families through these decisions so senior pictures feel confident, effortless, and thoughtfully done (without stress or second-guessing). Because when it’s planned well, we promise the photoshoot part is actually enjoyable ;)
