Mom Becky has an absolute gift for dressing her family in outfits that bring out their best features and celebrate their unique personalities.

  1. The key is starting with a theme - this year was studio formal.

  2. Next up, selecting a color palette. Black, silver, and sparkle

  3. Finally, style to match the personality of each family member.

Paying special attention to favorite features and style preferences for each person is a great way to add variety to the overall look and feel of your family portraits. Adore your neckline? Show a little shoulder. Beautiful biceps? - go sleeveless. Love your legs? Why not put those gams on display!

BIG Family shoot in the Snow at Snoqualmie Pass

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and sharing that our BIG Family shoot in the snow did finally happen… just barely but it freaking happened. Read on for details and epic fails…

Studio B Portraits_Winter snow pictures at Snoqualmie Pass_Clark.jpg

Like you, I see the perfect Pinterest family pictures and I mistakenly think that it’s all magically going to happen for our family of sixteen. If I thought last year’s “Let’s all wear white” 2017 theme made my entire family annoyed - it was NOTHING compared to the “Yep, we’re driving to the snow and I don’t exactly know where we’ll find it” plan of 2018. Throw in a broken camera remote control, running out of gas and rapidly dropping sun for the win. Falalala. But then something turned the tide. After 40 minutes of tumbleweeds… there was FINALLY snow to be found at Snoqualmie Pass. And just like a well timed Christmas miracle… this happened.

My Dad spontaneously lays the biggest kiss on my Mom (yes… it was totally unprompted and followed by huge cheers from everyone)

My son served up the sweetest smile (instead of the crazy-I’m-five grin that I’ve been getting all year. He was freezing and I’m pretty sure the sincere joy is actually him being able to feel his fingers again.

My sisters family that is impossibly photogenic nailed the “let’s walk in the snow” portion of the event but dropped the ball a bit on “throwing snow.”

Formal Portraits inspired by the movie Crazy Rich Asians? Yes Please.

So the phone rings and the woman on the other side of the phone says… I had an idea for a photo shoot where my entire family gets really dressed up (even though that’s not normally who we are in real life” Go on I say. She then shared with me that she’d like to do a formal family portrait inspired by the movie Crazy Rich Asians? “Yes, please” I say… and you had me at “really dressed up!”

Family Portraits in Black & White Perfection inspired by Cindy Crawford + Omega

Family Portraits in black and white perfection inspired by Cindy Crawford + Omeg a… it was a theme I’d had in my back pocket for about 2 years. Not going to lie, I was almost 100% going to do it with my family but my kiddos were intent on doing a shoot with red balloons - I said no so they pitched family portraits in the snow - um - I digress. Let’s get back to the beautiful Martorano family that killed this look!

The Martorano five just radiate effortless cool and this black on black theme could not have been any more amazing.

The Clark Holiday Family Portraits... some times you have to pivot!

This year we planned to do our holiday family portrait up in the snow but Mother Nature had other plans - bone dry and not a snowflake in sight had us doing a major pivot (think Ross from Friends) so we headed into the city to make memories and a little holiday magic at Enchant Christmas in Seattle. It was chilly and crazy crowded, my husband was the biggest kid of the bunch but as always... we felt blessed in every way. All that being said… I have a confession…

 www.thealbumcafe.com

Every year I wonder - “Geez what the heck are we going to do next year?” but isn’t it funny how something always comes together? I decided a long time ago that my true happiness was going to be in all pieces of the process. YES, I definitely want the photogenic reward but these family portraits for our crew have literally become our tradition together. I pitch concepts to my family, they veto. I pick out clothes and my son refuses to wear the shoes. I want to style the girls hair and darn it if they don’t have an opinion about that too but when all is said and done… we ALWAYS have fun and everyone loves looking at the portraits. So with another year under our belts I ask myself - “What are we going to do next time?” (Pretty sure I’m going to eat another dozen frosted Christmas cookies and figure it out later)

A final word… I find myself so full of gratitude for this time of year and having wonderful people in my life. I’m thankful for our clients that have grown with us over the last 13 years and to my amazing Studio B Family that makes it a joy to come to work every day and do what I love. Thank you to Erin and Makayla (below) for being so amazing.

This one is for the book.... making memories into a treasured keepsake

“This one is for the book!” - I’m pretty sure I say that phrase at some point during every family shoot. It’s usually when something fun, silly, or maybe even decidedly “un-done’ happens but I wanted to talk a little bit about why these moments are treasured keepsakes. In a word - they are “real” and they become the images later that will make your heart smile.

Black on black holiday family portraits_0213.jpg

You might be wondering what I mean by “book” so let me explain. We design a gorgeous flush-mount album from almost every family session that includes all of your favorite portraits from your family experience. The cover is typically your family in all of your photogenic awesomeness.

Black on black holiday family portraits_0211.jpg

Open the cover and that’s where the real magic unfolds. The in-between moments that are both perfect and un-perfect all presented in one beautiful story that is your family right now.

Black on black holiday family portraits_0215.jpg

I tell Mom’s all of the time - put these moments in your book. You will marvel at how much you enjoy the candid captures later. (And the things that you were critical about yourself… trust me, later all you will see is how young and beautiful you were too!!!)

Black on black holiday family portraits_0212.jpg

Things that we forget about who these little humans were at this time come rushing back with just one turn of the page. Can you believe I’ve been photographing this lovely family since their baby boy was in Mom’s tummy? It’s true… and she has the books to prove it.

Black on black holiday family portraits_0214.jpg

One of the things we hear most from our clients is how much they enjoy having the portraits from their session in one place with no “to do” item… nothing to frame or figure out. Plus — BONUS you have all of the moments socially too for your phone to show/share on Facebook, Instagram and with family. Best of both worlds.

Falala Formal Family Portraits are Fabulous during the holiday season

Mom Victoria in her gorgeous floral gown in red and black had us stepping back to ooh and ah. Her twin boy could not have been anymore dapper in their matching Calvin Klein suits. Head to toe handsome.

Fun fact: We photographed Mom and her twins when they were just newborns. Time flies but how is it that Mom looks like not a day has passed?

Newborn portraits with Baby Cantalini on her 5th day have us all kinds of happy (and judging by her sweet smile, she’s quite joy-filled too!)

We have never seen such a calm and composed couple of a first born; proud new parents Molly and Kyle are clearly made for this. Fun fact - we photographed Kyle’s Senior Pictures way back in the day and this is the ultimate full circle moment for us getting to welcome his growing family back to the studio.
